I just recently discovered the lettering on this mythologized 13th century document. Written in Latin, the capitals, especially on the first row of lettering are phenomenal.

Association of Calligraphic Arts The ACA is the national organization for calligraphy.

St Johns Bible A modern manuscript created by calligrapher Donald Jackson. A glorious masterpiece of contemporary calligraphy.

In the Public Eye

The first cow parade in the States was hosted by Chicago and I was living there at the time had a chance to see it. Yes, it was a wonderful display of artistic talent and yet a huge disappointment to me as a calligrapher. Despite the fact that Chicago has an incredibly strong and vibrant calligraphy community with nationally and internationally recognized calligraphic artists, there was not a calligraphy cow to be seen. It was a reminder of how separate we can be from the larger artistic community--something that can be changed. One, as calligraphers we have no reason to be shy about our work. It is wonderful and unique and as important as any other artistic expression. That said, I'm thrilled to say there are at least two calligraphy sculptures, one in the Boston Cowparade (sponsored by Borders) and a Constitution Horse at the Granby CT Horse Parade.

Plus, this is a forum where we can make opportunities known for us to show our work with the general art community. The Granby Land Trust is sponsoring an art show this fall with BIG prize money--it's even gotten me thinking about how I can incorporate lettering into an artwork that fits the show's parameters (must be an image from specific properties the GLT owns). They have a link on their home page leading to more details. Maybe an image of a stone with the Sermons in Stones passage by Shakespeare, hmm.......
