HISTORY

The Connecticut Vally Calligraphers (CVC) was formed in the summer of 1983 "to promote, encourage and publicize the art of beautiful lettering." It began with a small group of calligraphy teachers, professional letterers and devout hobbyists. They saw a need for a local calligraphy group - a place where letter-lovers could gather for fellowship, education, inspiration and encouragement. Sandwiched between Boston and New York City, the Hartford area scribes longed for a chance to attract writing masters to the lovely Connecticut Valley.

While professional and freelance calligraphers belong to the organization, the majority of CVC members consider calligraphy a hobby. To those who feel that this is a group of expert letterers, rest assured, any and all levels of expertise find a welcome here. Some of our volunteers on the board or on committees are relative newcomers to the world of calligraphy, but have brought a determined zeal which applies to both their calligraphy and their role in the group.

RECENT EVENTS

This past summer, we hosted a Demonstration Night, a free night for the public to come and see calligraphy done live. In addition to demonstrations, we featured a display of contemporary work, tools, class info, samples of "this-is-where-I-started" work to show the beginners that even the more advanced calligraphers all started with some pretty rough stuff, and more.

Recent workshops have included Renee Ahlstrom on pure pigments, Annie Cicale on color, Christopher Calderhead on contemporary manuscripts, Maria Thomas on Zentagles, Victoria Pittman on flowers done with calligraphic tools, and Rosie Kelly on paste papers. In 2005 we hosted an exhibition at the Northwestern Community College in Winsted featuring calligraphic artists from across the state.
