This 8 week course will offer instruction in such basic "hands" as Roman Capitals, Foundational, Italic & Blackletter. Experienced students will work on individual projects & receive insrtuction in lettering styles of their choice. Emphasis will be on practical use of calligraphy to create cards, posters, invitations, broadsides & small books. Layout & design & use of color will be included.

Broaden your calligraphic repertoire with this graceful, flowing script. Instead of our familiar broad-edged nibs, we will use flexible pen points & a pressure & release technique. With its elegant twining curves, roundhand script is perfect for invitations, valentines & decorative flourishing. This course is also open to intermediate level students who would like guidance on individual projects.

The course will introduce the fundamentals of the foundational lettering style, writing with a metal nib, working with color & more. We will also create a Japanese-style book that highlights the techniques learned in class. This is an excellent class for young students, adults and teenagers.

Lettering on Backgrounds

Instruction from 7:00 to 9:00 pm.
In this course students will create a wide variety of backgrounds, including watercolors, paste papers even gold leaf. Then the students will explore the tips and techniques of lettering on these and other surfaces. Students will also be given the opportunity to bring in surfaces & backgrounds of their choosing to discuss lettering on those surfaces. (glass, fabric, rocks, wood, etc). This class is designed for students that have taken at least one calligraphy course. Cost: $120 class fee; $15 materials fee to the instructor.
