Introduction to Chinese Calligraphy
Lorelei Chang was born and raised in China. In January 2009, Her work was a Chinese Calligraphy award winner at the Tokyo Museum. The workshop introduces you to the one of the most beautiful Chinese ancient fine arts, the Chinese calligraphy which has thousands of years of history. Chinese calligraphy is not only a practical technique for writing Chinese characters, but also a unique oriental art of expression, a tool to help ease physicaly and mental tension, reduce stress and learn discipline. You will learn some basic elements, strokes and fundamental techniques of Chinese calligraphy brush work through this class. We will teach you to create your own piece of Chinese calligraphy on the traditional rice paper to take it home. Call: 860-648-1825
The course will introduce script lettering in the copperplate style. We'll use an oblique nib holder, pointed nibs, ink and gouache. Previous calligraphy experience is not required for this course. We will also create a handmade book featuring the lettering learned in the course. Cost: $100. Materials fee of $25 includes all the supplies necessary for class (collected during first class). www.letteringdesign.com ILLUMINATION TECHNIQUES I will introduce illumination techniques to embellish your lettering. Learn how to create beautiful borders, versal letters, vines, use gold leaf and more. With these basic techniques you can create a huge array of illuminated designs. You will also create your very own contemporary Book of Hours. No calligraphy experience is needed for this class. It will be great for beginners as well as continuing students. This class will not include instruction for any particular lettering style. Cost: $100. Materials fee to the instructor: $30 (includes 23K gold leaf, base for gold, fine quality brush, nibs, paper for the book, etc). Supply list will be provided during the first class. www.letteringdesign.com CALLIGRAPHY II: Building on the Basics For those already experienced in lettering with a dip nib and ink, we will study the italic lettering style, examining branching, pen angle, letter height, capitals and flourishing—all those elements that make italic the hallmark style of calligraphy. We will do more work with layout and design, creating several compositions that will develop both lettering and design skills. We will create a handbound letter journal during the class and fill its pages with designs and concepts introduced in the class.
